Cold Rain And Snow is a murder ballad and classic Appalachian American folksong who's shape, style and lyrics have morphed over its long existence. The song is believed to have originated from America's Southern Appalachian Mountains, and first appeared in print in Olive Dame Campbell and Cecil Sharp's 1917 compilation "English Folk Songs From the Southern Appalachians."
Stripped to the studs, Stephen Artemis Jr.'s brooding rendition of Cold Rain And Snow reclaims the songs early dark roots. Artemis' arrangement was recorded by Brian Speaker, (Jeffrey Lewis, The Fem Dom’s), produced by Stephen Artemis Jr. and Brian Speaker, and mastered by Alex Saltz (Deer Tick, Vampire Weekend, Steven Van Zandt).
lyrics
Well I married me a wife, she gave me trouble all my life.
Left me out in that cold rain and snow.
Well I saw her in the shade, counting every dime I made.
Sipping lemonade while I'm broke and hungry too.
When she come down the stairs, holding back her long yellow hair.
And her cheeks were as red as a rose.
Well I've done all that I can do, and after all that we've been through.
And I ain't gonna be treated this way.
